Those who argue women’s equality demands abortion are actually making a misogynistic assumption, whether they realize it or not. The assumption is that the only way for women to be on a level playing field with men is to deny the unique thing women can do that men cannot: bring life into the world.
The U.S. women’s soccer team has done it again!! Today they beat the Netherlands 2-0 in the World Cup Finals for their fourth title and second in a row. Just wow.
I got pretty choked up watching, thinking of all the guts and glory. Such amazing athletes, training and strength. Such an honor, excelling in football on the world stage, in front of millions of fans. To play on the chant in the catchy advertisement that was released minutes after their win:
I…
I BELIEVE…
I BELIEVE THAT…
I BELIEVE THAT WE…
I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL SEE…
…the end of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault, abortion, every injustice—individual and governmental, corporate greed, hypocrisy, war and environmental abuse. I believe that we will experience world peace, environmental harmony, human flourishing, loving relationships and a time when the hearts of parents are turned toward their children and the hearts of children to their parents.
I BELIEVE THAT…
…this time is coming soon, when ALL THINGS will be made new. When every tear will be wiped away, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain.
I BELIEVE THAT…
…we must forgive and love and strive for peace, but no amount of forgiving, loving or peace-making can atone for our rebelliousness. FIRST, we must REPENT, and admit, that we can never be or do enough on our own.
I BELIEVE THAT…
…God is and always has been. He made all of creation and us to be in harmony with him and each other. When we broke faith, in the very beginning, he already had a plan to reconcile us to him. He came to Earth, as Yeshua/Jesus/Immanuel, to keep a promise—a covenant. We must trust him.
We can do so much better than breaking every single glass ceiling and having our faces memorialized in stone. We can and should speak out and act against injustice, AND we can and should have an eternal perspective:
"So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever." ~ Eugene Peterson's The Message paraphrase of 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
I BELIEVE THAT…
…because we have eternal perspective and are loyal to an eternal King, we should act for justice, we should forgive, we should be peacemakers, we should love our neighbors (our actual neighbor, immigrants, our family, our friends, our enemies), especially when they seem unlovable. And we should always remember, that it is because of grace, that we are forgiven and saved.
Protection for the Preborn
An opportunity is before Michigan citizens. By working together, we can ban the inhumane abortion procedure known as the D&E or dilation and evacuation. This method of abortion uses surgical instruments to forcibly remove arms and legs from a living human being in the womb.
Michigan’s Constitution allows its citizens to initiate legislation through a petition. The petition seeks legislation that would amend our partial-birth abortion ban by adding the equally horrific dismemberment abortion procedure to that ban. The advantage of this approach is that the bill’s language cannot be changed by the legislature, nor can it be vetoed by the governor.
Join Us in Signing the Petition!
We have 168 days to collect 400,000 signatures. If 340,047 are valid, legislation to ban dismemberment abortions will be initiated into the Legislature. If it passes the Michigan House and Senate by majority votes, the legislation becomes law.
Scott and I will be at two different public places next Saturday, July 13, where you can meet up with us to sign this petition. You must be a registered voter in Michigan.
